What are hooked rugs?

Hooked rugs are created by pulling loops of fabric or yarn through a firm woven base such as linen, burlap or rug wrap. These rugs may feature both simple and complex designs ranging from uncomplicated geometric shapes to complex bird and tree designs.

How are Tufted and Hooked Rugs different from the hand-knotted rugs?

Tufted rugs and hooked rugs are very different from hand-knotted rugs – in the sense that the hand-knotted rugs are the most difficult to craft while tufted and hooked rugs are not quite as complex. For artisans creating hand-knotted rugs – it takes years of practice to develop the required skills.

How are Hooked Rugs different from Tufted Rugs?

There are definite differences between Hooked and Tufted rugs that you should acquaint yourself with. It is the surface pile of tufted and hooked rugs that forms the basis of the difference between the two. Tufted rugs come with cut pile sans loops while hooked rugs have loops.

Hooked rugs are crafted mainly by using a hook resembling a crochet hook. There are a few rugs that come with the combination loops and cut pile on the surface. Notably, after the artisans are done crafting hooked rugs they cover the back of the rugs with liquid latex to protect the stitches. The latex coating also provides dependable cushioning.

Hooked Rugs: Tracing their Gradual Evolution and more

For generations, Hooked rugs have remained a crucial part of interiors. It is believed that hooked rugs were earlier primarily preferred for their functionality and not for their visual appeal. They were meant to keep our feet warm. And the ones that found their place at the doorstep were, of course, meant to wipe our muddy feet on.

If you are considering options, make sure you explore the plethora of stores available online, and browse the Homespice website https://homespice.com, which is a trusted site for all types of rugs.
