Primitive Trends

rustic cnadle in primitive decor

Recently we called up 3 stores in Ohio to see what was selling for them. Here is what they said:

Tammy Moorman – Rustiques - Ohio

“Words” on anything sells. It has been strong for 5 years. Anything inspirational with words on it. But I am tired of ordering it. Vintage is doing well for us. Pale colors, lighter creams. Light creams and beiges.

Homespice Products that sell for you:
  • Trio rugs are doing very well, specially the Trio Charm, even though that’s not a very primitive look.
  • I am still selling a lot of blacks, such as Salem or Kilimanjaro. The Harvest still sells really well.
  • I am bringing in the Ultra Durable Rugs over in my new store.

Jennifer Troyer – Country Gatherings – Ohio

LED glow candles

People are looking for a lot of wooden pieces, old bowls, trenchers. (That’s where your penny rugs go).Lanterns are huge, old looking lanterns.A lot of mirrors that look like “old mirrors”. Old looking wooden signs. Candles are always huge and ALL of the flicker flame stuff, they are really hard to find in the grungy primitive look. (That’s where your penny runners fit in, I’ll put your runner under a lantern and it just sells.)

Homespice Products that sell for you: The Penny stuff you guys are doing are very popular and all the hooked things. A lot of darker colors – blacks, reds, tans, mustards.

Sandy Hatcher - Enchanted Forest - Ohio

Primitive décor : A lot of the dishtowels with the words and the tobacco curtain. Family Heirloom Weavers bedspreads. The colors are still the country red, the blacks, the beiges, (taupe beiges). Most of the knick knack stuff have sayings on them. Burlap is big. And stuff that has burlap accent on them. Burlap pointsettas, burlap ribbons. A little but of cute-sy country still sells.

Homespice Products that sell for you:
  • Love the new ultra durable rug, love the new rugs and I am selling more ultra durable rugs than I the jute. I’ve got one (Ultra-Durable) that’s been down for more than a year, it’s had coffee poured on it every day, and it’s not been cleaned yet. I do still sell the jute rugs, but if people have the money they will go for the ultra durable.
  • My favorite Ultra Durable colors are – Black Forest and Black Mist.

A dining room is always a special place in your home, and chairs are an invitation to sit and chat for awhile. Wooden spindle chairs and ladder-backed chairs can be beautiful to look at but they’re not always comfortable to sit on are they? Could yours use a little help? Why not try some braided chair pads and make those chairs as comfortable and as beautiful as possible for your friends and family? Add a dash of color or keep within the color range of the chair. You choose what will suit you best. They’re perfect with primitive décor and other traditional colonial style furniture.

• Sometimes it only takes a small change to make a big difference

Gorgeous, colorful braided chair pads are a quick and inexpensive choice you can make to cover your wooden chair seats and all have ties to keep them in place. At the same time, your décor suddenly pulls together and you know your home looks and feels more comfortable.

Homespice has braided chair pads in 22 different color combinations - with trivets, coasters, 15” star trivets, placemats and table runners to match. Colors include, rich browns, rustic reds, sunrise oranges, ocean blues, spring and forest greens and harvest mustard golds. Some are subtle blends and some are dramatic. Spark Conversation with
Penny Rugs and Table Runners

Unique creations, for unique places, for unique people

Penny Rug designs are among the most enduring and loved traditions of colonial Americana. Each one was handmade with colors chosen and hand sewn by the innovative pioneer creator of the rug and placed in an important spot in the home. Homespice duplicates the traditional way of creating penny rugs, carefully choosing the colors to delight the individual senses and sewing the layers of ‘pennies’ together by hand, ready for the creativity of modern home decorators to choose the perfect place for them.

A penny rug in that perfect spot in a home will spark conversation and questions. They are used as rugs, of course, but also as table runners, chair and bed throws, wall decorations or wherever a creative imagination wants to place them. And although traditional colonial pieces, some of them are suggestive of North American Indian or African designs.

Part of the charm of penny rugs and table runners is their bright mix of colors. Some appear to be haphazard, but in fact, colors and designs are carefully chosen to appeal and balance. Homespice has a variety of different examples of penny rugs and table runners in colors and sizes to fit unique tastes and color schemes. It’s just a matter of finding the style and color that suits each personality and home.

In spite of their popularity, no one knows who made the first penny rugs - although we do know that penny rugs were in many homes by the time of the Civil War - and that penny coins were used as a template. That was not, however, the same penny coin you see in America in modern times. Colonial penny coins were considerably bigger.

• Just how big do you think those first American penny coins were? Early penny coins were about twice the size of what they currently are and, incidentally, if you could find one now, it might be worth up to $2,600.

Using one of those large penny coin as a template, women fashioned layers of felted wool in circles, sewing the circles together with a blanket stitch and sometimes placing them on a large backing piece or other times simply sewing the circles together to create captivating designs. At times the coins were even kept inside to help the piece lay fat.

Initially made in darker colors with old clothes and blankets, the penny rug concept sparked the creative colonial spirit and brighter colors were used as soon as they were available. As creativity flourished, the appliquéd, hand-pieced rugs were sometimes made with other images – birds, animals, stars, flowers - and story rugs began to emerge.

Homespice Penny rug table runners come in 17 different designs that make beautiful accents for dining room and side tables. They provide an intriguing variety of designs and colors and although made for tables, creative individuals will also choose to show them as pieces of art on the wall or choose another perfect spot for each unique situation.

Homespice penny rugs come in 5 different designs – each a stunning piece of art. They will add a colorful conversation piece and huge visual appeal to homes that include traditional styles, primitive décor and other ‘new-meets-old’ styles. They will also be a gorgeous addition to homes that are designed to include handmade, artistic pieces.
